I teach and coach writers all over the world in private and remote group classes, and with the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program. My students have completed and sold memoirs, won awards and fellowships, been published in major magazines and landed jobs in network writing rooms. But more importantly, they’re writing with clarity, passion and purpose, discovering new material they didn’t know they had and cultivating a deeper sense of self.

My background in journalism informs the way I teach all forms of writing. Tuning into the emotional and sensory detail of an experience helps us write with precision and depth. Simplifying structure allows writing to flow easily, and when we write clearly and concisely, our unique voice naturally emerges. In my own career, writing everything from humorous essays to true crime, I find that all great stories share many of the same ingredients.  As a teacher, my goal is to create a safe space where students can experiment with ideas and writing can grow.
